Well, we’ve gotten through where Jesus dies on the cross. We’d seen all the suffering and pain he went through.

    Mark 15:40
    There were also women looking on afar off: among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome;

    Mark 15:41
(Who also, when he was in Galilee, followed him, and ministered unto him) and many other women which came up with him unto Jerusalem.

Here, there were some that followed afar off.

    Mark 15:42
And now when the even was come, because it was the preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath,

This was Thursday here. The passover sabbath (Friday) was about to come. Remember….the Jewish sabbaths started at sundown the evening before, to sundown the next evening. This was the same day the Passover lamb would be slain….the day Jesus died. They had to prepare for the feast…the passover feast

    Mark 15:43
Joseph of Arimathaea, an honourable counsellor, which also waited for the kingdom of God, came, and went in boldly unto Pilate, and craved the body of Jesus.

Now, Joseph of Arimathaea was a member of the Sanhedrin. He waited for the kingdom of God…..He went in boldly to Pilate. He asked for the body of Jesus.

    Mark 15:44
And Pilate marvelled if he were already dead: and calling [unto him] the centurion, he asked him whether he had been any while dead.

Pilate here wanted to be sure that Jesus was dead.

    Mark 15:45
And when he knew [it] of the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.

Now, Joseph gets the body of Jesus.

    Mark 15:46
And he bought fine linen, and took him down, and wrapped him in the linen, and laid him in a sepulchre which was hewn out of a rock, and rolled a stone unto the door of the sepulchre.

wow! Not just linen….but FINE linen. It was probably bleached linen. He wrapped him in it, laid him in a sepulchre, or tomb that was carved out of a rock. Then….Joseph rolled a stone against the entrance of that tomb.

    Mark 15:47
And Mary Magdalene and Mary [the mother] of Joses beheld where he was laid.

Now, notice this. Jesus’ mother went all she could go there, didn’t she She couldn’t go any farther than the grave. You know what? We can’t go any farther than the grave with anyone, can we? I’m glad to know I have someone that will go farther than the grave, though. Praise the Lord!

    Mark 16:1
And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the [mother] of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him.

Now, the sabbath was past, and these women had bought sweet spices, to anoint Jesus with them. The Passover feast now was done…And the festival of firstfruits was to start now.

Jesus was the FIRSTfruit of what we will do one day.

    Mark 16:2
And very early in the morning the first [day] of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun.

Soon as they had enough light, they went to that tomb on Sunday.

    Mark 16:3
And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre?

Now, they had a problem. They didn’t have anyone to roll the stone away so they could probably anoint Jesus again. You ever have a problem that you didn’t know how it was going to turn out? I think we all have.

    Mark 16:4
And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great.

The stone was rolled away…It was very great. In all probability, this stone probably weighed about half a ton or so.

    Mark 16:5
And entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted.

Now, they see a young man on the right side of the tomb….wearing a long white garment….and these women were afraid.

    Mark 16:6
And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him.

Ahhhh. Don’t be afraid. You’re looking for Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified. He is not here. He is risen. Look at the place where they laid him.

Jesus had told the disciples, but no doubt, they had forgotten it. I’d say Mary had heard Jesus tell it as well. With God, all things are possible.

    Mark 16:7
But go your way, tell his disciples and Peter that he goeth before you into Galilee: there shall ye see him, as he said unto you.

Go. Tell his disciples and Peter that he goes before them into Galilee…Just like he told you.

    Mark 16:8
And they went out quickly, and fled from the sepulchre; for they trembled and were amazed: neither said they any thing to any [man]; for they were afraid.

They didn’t waste time getting out of there, did they? They were trembling and astonished. It over took them…They were afraid, and didn’t tell anyone.

You know, if someone that was dead just raised up, it would scare a body. A man I used to work with worked at a funeral home before. They went to get an elderly woman that had died. She had rheumatory arthritis….And while they were hauling her, she raised up….part of the reaction of the body after death….It scared that man to death.

So you can imagine this now. Some other friends of mine had a hearst. They bought it from the funeral home. They were driving along the Interstate, and one was laying down in the back. He raised up, and it scared the other motorists pretty good. Almost made a big wreck there.

i worked with a fellow, he would not go through the prep room, lol
ever think of speaking life back into a dead body as we have been told we can do, and them opening their eyes and looking at you?

Folks, one of these days, though…..

    1 Thessalonians 4:13
But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.

    1 Thessalonians 4:14
For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.

    1 Thessalonians 4:15
For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive [and] remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.

    1 Thessalonians 4:16
For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

    1 Thessalonians 4:17
Then we which are alive [and] remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

    1 Thessalonians 4:18
Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

This is a promise here to us. The dead in Christ shall rise first. Jesus was the firstfruits of that. Amazing that this day would also start the festival of fruits, isn’t it?

Let us remember…that we as Christians have hope everlasting….not just in this life.

    and the beginning without End!!

Good phrasing there, sparks1. It looked awfully gloomy when Jesus was dying, and when he was buried…..but…..the good news…Jesus is alive, and sitting at the right hand of God, ready to intercede for you and me.

No more need for priests. Jesus now is our mediator to God the Father.

    Mark 16:9
Now when [Jesus] was risen early the first [day] of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils.

We had studied this earlier in Matthew, if I’m not mistaken.

    Mark 16:10
[And] she went and told them that had been with him, as they mourned and wept.

Now, Mary Magdalene here went and told the disciples that Jesus was risen from the dead. You see, they all had been full of grief because Jesus had been crucified. No doubt, they had forgotten him telling them he would rise up again from the grave. He had told them this about four times earlier.

Hmm. Have you all ever had something go right over your head, even though you’d been told multiple times? I think we all have.

    Mark 16:11
And they, when they had heard that he was alive, and had been seen of her, believed not.

They heard her tell it, but they didn’t believe it.

    Mark 16:12
After that he appeared in another form unto two of them, as they walked, and went into the country.

Now, Jesus appears in another form to two of them, as they were walking into the country.

    Mark 16:13
And they went and told [it] unto the residue: neither believed they them.

They went back and told the rest, still the rest didn’t believe them.

    Mark 16:14
Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen.

Afterwards he appeared uto the eleven as they were eating…They were more or less reclining at the table, and Jesus rebuked them for their unbelief and hardness of their heart…They didn’t believe those who had seen Jesus. Now, they have him in person.

    Mark 16:15
And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

What a commission there. There was a two fold purpose for Jesus coming to the disciples in person. First, was to prove that He was alive…And second, to instruct them as what to do, and tell them about what their future ministry would involve.

Notice this….Preach the gospel only to the jews? No! Preach the gospel to EVERY creature. EVERY one. Jesus opened the doors for you and me, who were heathen, or gentiles, to be saved. We could have salvation.

    Mark 16:16
He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

He that believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.

    Mark 16:17
    And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

Now, Jesus tells the signs of those that would believe. Did you know that the weakest Christian scares the demons when he’s on his knees praying to the Lord?

    Mark 16:18
They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

Wow! Now, we saw an example when Paul was on Malta. He had gathered up wood, and a viper bit him. The people waited for him to fall over, but he never did…it didn’t harm him at all. Quite a few signs of believers here.

    Mark 16:19
So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.

Jesus, after instructing them was caught up to heaven, and sat on the right hand of God….Then…what happened?

    Mark 16:20
And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with [them], and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.

They went, preached every where, and confirming the word with the signs Jesus talked about. The book of Mark summarizes this up. Some of the other gospels tells more of the details of what all happened during this time…From Jesus’ resurrection to his being caught up to heaven.

The book of Mark was more simple written than the other gospels, but it’s still been good.
